Another Company Told Her She Needed a $13,500 Replacement. Here Is What We Actually Found.

What honest HVAC repair vs replacement diagnosis looks like in Chesapeake, VA.

A homeowner in Chesapeake called us about her HVAC system, one we had originally installed about ten years earlier. She'd been having it maintained by another company in recent years, and during a routine visit, that company told her something alarming: we had installed the system incorrectly, and she needed a complete replacement. Their quote was $13,500.

She called us.

WHAT WE ACTUALLY FOUND

When our technician went out and inspected the system, there was no installation defect. The claim that we had installed it incorrectly was not supported by anything he found on the unit, the ductwork, or the connections. Ten years of Hampton Roads operation, maintained through multiple service visits and the system was still in serviceable condition.

What was actually there: a minor issue with the drain line. Not a wiring problem. Not a compressor issue. Not a system that had been incorrectly installed. A drain line that needed attention, a straightforward repair.

We made the fix. The whole call took a fraction of what the replacement quote would have cost.

WHAT WE DID AND WHY WE DID IT THAT WAY

We repaired the drain line and confirmed the system was in good working order. The recommendation was not to replace it, because replacing it was not what the situation required.

I want to be direct about something: we installed that system originally. We had every incentive to validate the replacement claim, to say "yes, it's had a good run, time for a new one." That would have been a significant installation job for us.

Instead, our technician told her the system had years of life left in it, that the other company's $13,500 recommendation was not supported by the system's actual condition, and that a drain line repair was what the situation called for.

That is the Air Handlers standard. It is the only standard we have.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

If your HVAC system in Hampton Roads keeps having the same problem or if it has never felt quite right, even after a repair, the coastal environment may be a bigger factor than the service report showed.

Salt air and sustained humidity do not create problems that look like salt air and humidity on a standard inspection form. They create problems that look like component failure, refrigerant issues, and electrical faults. The difference matters when you're deciding whether to repair or replace.

This is exactly why we wrote a full guide to what Hampton Roads humidity and salt air do to your HVAC system, if you're dealing with a system that keeps breaking down, our guide to coastal HVAC conditions in Chesapeake walks through what we typically find and how we think through the right answer.

If you're in this situation right now and have questions before you commit to anything, call us. No pressure, just a conversation.  Air Handlers HVAC repair and service in Chesapeake.
